The Knox County Commission this week will begin picking through and potentially tweaking Mayor Tim Burchett's proposed budget.

The emphasis, officials say, will be on school spending .

Knox Co. school budget takes $3M hit after state funding reduced

The Knox County School system will get $2.9 million less than it initially expected in state funding, according to new estimates.

That now means Knox County Mayor Tim Burchett will revise his proposed budget for the upcoming fiscal year to reflect the drop.

Nearly 2,000 graduates in black caps and gowns received their diplomas at the University of Tennessee Friday, but one journalism and electronic media major had no idea her younger brother, who has been deployed for the past 16 months, flew home to surprise her on stage.

Knox BOE extends Dr. McIntyre's contract through 2017

(WBIR) The Knox County Board of Education voted Monday night to extend Superintendent Dr. Jim McIntyre's contract an additional year as part of his annual performance review. His contract will run through the end of 2017.

The 8-1 vote came after a five-hour long meeting during which nearly 50 people spoke for or against the extension of the superintendent's contract. Knox County board member Mike McMillan was the only no vote.

2 Knox Co. schools consider longer day

(WBIR-Knoxville) Students and teachers at two Knox County schools could have longer school days next year.

According to the Associated Press, districts in four states already added hours to the day at some schools, and Tennessee is the fifth state to consider the program.

AP reported Metro Nashville and Knox County Schools are the two districts in state that would be affected.

Dr. Jim McIntyre, Knox County Schools superintendent, was tight-lipped on the topic.
