Local shoe drive helps create small businesses overseas

Soon spring cleaning will hit many households, but an East Tennessee church is asking the community to start cleaning up a bit earlier this year.

St. John Neumann Youth Ministry in Farragut is asking people to look through their closets for old shoes to donate. The collected shoes will be sent overseas to help people in other countries start small businesses. The fundraiser will also help young people in Knoxville attend youth ministry events and camps, along with helping people in other countries become self-sufficient.

Al Forsythe, a coordinator at St. John Neumann, said the drive is a win-win situation.

"We win because some donated shoes go to help other organizations," said Forsythe. "People in other countries get the win-win because they get to sustain themselves with new businesses that will help them keep going. We are trying to give a hand up, not a hand out."

The fundraiser will continue through June 15. You can drop off shoes at St. John Neumann Church or school at 645 St John Court in Farragut.
