Woman charged after accident caused by texting

Knoxville Police said a woman was texting while driving, which caused her to lose control of her SUV and crash into a utility pole.

The crash, which happened Thursday morning on Middlebrook Pike near Robinson Road, shut down one lane of Middlebrook Pike for about five hours.

Investigators cited the driver, Melanie Sheffler, with careless driving. They said she was reading text messages when the accident happened. Her SUV ran off the road, hit the pole, then rolled down an embankment.

Sheffler was wearing a seat belt, which officers credit with keeping her from being seriously injured or killed.

All lanes of west bound Middlebrook Pike reopened at approximately 1:30 p.m.

A car wreck on Middlebrook Pike has shut down a section of the road for several hours.

At about 8:30 a.m., Knoxville police said an SUV ran off the road, hit a utility pole, and rolled down an embankment while heading westbound on Middlebrook just east of Robinson Road.

KUB has shut down westbound lanes of that section of Middlebrook Pike because the accident damaged power lines and an utility pole. The road won't reopen until 2 or 3 p.m.

Crews took the driver to University of Tennessee Medical Center for what police say appears to be non-serious injuries.
