A retired Knoxville police officer died in a car crash in west Knoxville on Thursday night.

Knoxville police said David Gaston Sr., 52, was driving down the West Hill Road exit ramp from I-40 eastbound when his car and a mini-van collided shortly before 11 p.m. Gatson's car slammed into a steel utility pole; the impact killed the retired officer, who police said wasn't wearing a seat belt.

Crews took the 17-year-old driver of the van to the University of Tennessee Medical Center for non-life threatening injures.

Officials said they're still investigating the crash.

Gatson retired in Oct. 2012 after serving 26 years with the department.
