HGTV celebrates 20 years on the air
News

HGTV is celebrating a big milestone this year; the Knoxville-based cable network has been on the air for 20 years.

The channel started broadcasting to more than six million homes on Dec. 30, 1994. In the past two decades, the channel has grown to reach almost 100 million viewers and airs in 69 countries with popular shows about renovation, gardening and home design. Even with all that growth, the company has kept its headquarters in East Tennessee.

"We didn't want to be in L.A. or New York. We wanted to be in the Heartland. We wanted to be where our employees could relate to middle America, owning a home, having a garden, having a yard," said Ken Lowe, president and CEO of Scripps Network. "The reason we stayed is because anyone who is watching this, who lives in Knoxville knows, it's just a great place.

Gov. Bill Haslam and Knoxville Mayor Madeline Rogero declared today "HGTV Day" during a celebration with employees.
