Long line forms at Gander Mountain for ammunition

The demand for ammunition continues as Washington debates the possibility of stricter gun laws.

Several national chains and East Tennessee gun shops are sold out of certain types of ammunition.

Gun owners have resorted to waiting in lines in order to get it.

On Friday morning, a long line formed at Gander Mountain at Turkey Creek.

"They get their truck in on Thursday night and people line up early on Friday morning in order to get a very limited supply [of ammo]," said James Stutz, who was waiting in line on Friday morning.

He went on to say, "There's been a big run on people stocking up on ammunition and the demand is so much more than the supply."

Gander Mountain's doors open at 9 a.m.

By 8:30 a.m., the line was long enough to reach the side of the building.

"I just came by because I had some spare time to get some ammo but apparently I wasn't the only one with the idea," said Jim Smith.

Patrick Cohan added, "I've been checking out online and at the other gun stores and they're all sold out."

Several customers said the line happens every week, for the past several weeks.

"By noon today on Friday their stock will be depleted," Stutz said.

Although there are several different types of ammunition in high demand, Stutz said there is one getting more attention.

"One of the things that's really in high demand right now is for the .22 long rifle. Now that's used 90% for target practice. That's what I use it for. It's rather inexpensive and you can go target practice for several hours and not spend a lot of money. That's rationed here. You can only get like 4 boxes at a time. Most places don't have it period," Stutz said.

At the end of January, Wal-Mart announced it would be rationing its ammunition.

Customers can buy up to three boxes each day.

A man waiting in line at Gander Mountain said his closest Wal-Mart had been sold out of ammunition for months.

"It used to be you could get as much as you wanted.  You got some crazy people doing some crazy things and we're the ones getting punished for it," Smith said.

A Gander Mountain spokesperson said, "Sales numbers on ammunition and other items are not publicly available, but this is always a busy time of year, and business levels have been encouraging. We are working hard to serve the needs of our customers."
