Tennova holds public meeting to discuss new hospital

(WBIR, Knoxville) Monday night, Tennova officials met with concerned North Knoxville residents to discuss the future of the old St. Mary's campus.

Tennova plans to get a "certificate of need" in order to build a new hospital off Middlebrook Pike. Physicians Regional, the old St. Mary's campus, will be used as an urgent and primary care clinic.

The current building is 83 years old and has been renovated numerous times since the '60s. Tennova officials think a new hospital will benefit the community in the long run, but some residents don't understand the need for the move.

"A new hospital such as this can better serve them for 50 years rather than pumping in money to the existing campus and really not getting the return to the community as we would want," said Mike Garfield, Tennova CEO.

"They're moving into an area which to me already has a fair number of beds and hospitals that are serving that area," David Booker, North Knoxville resident.

The new location on Middlebrook Pike is five miles from the current property.

Tennova will hold another public meeting sometime in July.
